Medical Oncology
Department of Medical Oncology at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre offers state of the art treatment modalities including autologous and allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant. There is a substantial patient workload, which is taken care by highly qualified, and Experienced Medical Oncologist & Pediatric Oncologists and Hematologist who work full time for this institute only. Regular teaching programmes are being undertaken to train the resident staff and students registered for super specialty degree (DNB) in Medical Oncology. Facilities are available to undertake outpatients' chemotherapy in specialized day care units. Specially trained nursing staff assists in administration of chemotherapy in both day care as well as inpatients. Chemotherapy Drug mixing is done at a separately designated area under laminar air flow to ensure patient & staff safety to prevent health hazards. In order to make administration of chemotherapy safe and more patient friendly, use of central catheters and ports is a routine in the department.
Since the establishment of Bone Marrow Transplant facilities successful autologous stem cell transplants as well as Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant have been carried out at a very cost effective package. The transplant unit has modern facilities with rooms for strict isolation that are looked after by a big team of dedicated nursing staff. The department is backed by a modern and highly efficient blood bank offering facility for blood & blood components including platelet Apheresis round the clock. A large number of pediatric patients are also being treated at this hospital.
This department is backed by excellent radiotherapy and surgical oncology departments for multimodality treatment. The excellent radiological and imaging services along with nuclear medicine services altogether strengthen the diagnostic as well as supporting care.
