Surgical Oncology refers to the treatment of cancer by removing or treating the diseased part with either minor or major operation. Several factors have led to the recent increase in the development in Surgical Oncology and to the organization of separate sections of Surgical Oncology.
This enthusiasm derives from the recognition that modern Oncologist management requires levels of expertise in Cancer Surgery, Chemotherapy that are not common to most general surgery. Modern Oncology management requires levels of expertise in Cancer Surgery, Chemotherapy, and Radiotherapy. Surgical oncologist can provide unique surgical expertise in surgical cases unfamiliar to general surgeons.
The Objectives of the Surgical Oncology department are the following: • Cure or palliate and improve quality of life emphasizing on multimodal treatment. • Practice evidence based medicine. • To achieve minimal morbidity and near zero mortality which is acceptable by any international norms. • Good preoperative preparation, careful preoperative monitoring, postoperative care.
The faculty of Surgical Oncology consists of thirteen Senior Consultants in various subspecialties, one Associate Consultant, two Clinical Assistant and Residents to each oncosurgical unit.
Dose to be given to the patient. The dose is given to the patient by the nuclear medicine physicist. Reading is taken after giving the medicines. The patient is continuously monitored with a gun monitor to record the discharge level of the patient. When the radiation level comes to 0 the room can be used by the other patient. The patient is discharged after checking the radiation level. All the used items of the patients are discarded after the treatment.
HIFU- Department of Genitourinary Oncology has recently added High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for treating organ confined cancer prostate using SONABLADE 500 First time in a exclusive cancer centre in India. HIFU has very encouraging results and almost nil morbidity.
