BMT
Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) can be a life saving treatment for patients who have cancer, such as Leukemia and Lymphoma as well as inherited diseases of blood as Thalassemia and conditions where bone marrow stops producing new blood cells like Aplastic Anaemia.
BMT involves replacing diseased marrow with healthy marrow, which is injected into the blood stream via an intravenous route. The marrow may come from a healthy donor or healthy stem cells may be collected from the blood of the patient.
More than 50 transplants in children and adults have been performed in Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre since the bone marrow transplant program was established in 2001. This transplant unit has performed allogenic transplantation from siblings for a variety of conditions including relapsed Leukemia, Thalassemia and Alpastic Anemia.
The adult transplant unit functions under the guidance of a renowned hematologist to perform both autologus & allogenic from the peripheral stem cells and bone marrow.
The transplants in children are being carried out under supervision and guidance of an experienced Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist who has specially trained in transplantation. The pediatric team’s experience and expertise in the field provide dual benefit for children with various cancers and life threatening hematological disorders.
